Chutzpah! Festival unveils lineup for February 2011
A Broadway musical, improvised klezmer chamber music, and an acclaimed Israeli dance troupe are just a few of the acts announced for next year's Chutzpah! Festival.
The event, subtitled The Lisa Nemetz International Showcase of Jewish Performing Arts, returns to its regular slot, from February 10 to 27, 2011, after having to occur later last year due to the Olympics.
Tickets go on sale November 11. Shows mostly take place at the Norman & Annette Rothstein Theatre.
Stage shows at the 11th annual fest include the Broadway musical Falsettos, as well as the world premiere of How To Disappear Completely, by local lighting designer Itai Erdal.
On the music end of the festival, look for the return of Balkan Beat Box, as well as Klezmerata Fiorentina, featuring four players from Florence's Orchestra del Maggio Musicale, and Yemen Blues, which is described as Yemenite poetry mixed with everything from blues and funk to afro-caribbean sounds.
Dance-wise, Israel’s 18-member Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company presents the Western Canadian premiere of Ekodoom. Elsewhere, male dancers and choreographers Kevin O’Day, Robert Glumbeck and Luches Huddleston Jr. present Full Bloom.
