The Grapes of Wrath at Venue

You might recall that the Grapes of Wrath released an album about a decade ago, but that wasn’t really the Grapes, was it? It was Kevin Kane and Tom Hooper, and that’s pretty damn close—but without Tom’s brother Chris behind the drum kit? Not quite close enough for the die-hards. Well, Chris is back in the fold, which means the version of the band now making the rounds is the honest-to-God, accept-no-substitutes, original Grapes of Wrath that fans have been waiting 18 years to see. Yup, 18 years: the boys broke up in 1992. Kinda makes you feel old, doesn’t it? But not half as old as you’ll feel the morning after their show, when it comes crashing home that you can no longer hold your liquor the way you could in college, back when “You May Be Right” ruled the CASBY Awards. If you’re planning to go see the Grapes at Venue on Friday (October 29), don’t bother looking for your old Treehouse T-shirt; your mom threw that out when you left home, along with your Robert Smith poster, your broken lava lamp, and those issues of Penthouse Forum you forgot you had stashed under your mattress. No matter—the band’s website promises that vintage merch will be available at the show. Old stuff! Not as old as you, though.
