B.C. NDP cancels emergency caucus meeting scheduled to deal with dissenters to Carole James

B.C. NDP caucus chair Kathy Corrigan has announced that an emergency caucus meeting has been postponed.

"Time is being given for private discussions to ensure that the clear direction set by our leader and our party is followed: to unite and offer British Columbians a positive progressive alternative in the next election," Corrigan said in a statement.

The meeting was scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. today (December 5) in the wake of a crisis over the leadership of Carole James.

Great news! Hopefully this means work is being done to repair the rift in caucus. Good work by both sides, I strongly urge they continue to resolve this behind closed doors. Let's focus on going after the Liberals and work towards forming the next government!

They can't even agree on when to fight? What a laughing stock!

what a surprise. When is James going to realize that her political career in this province is over?

We need to get on with this showdown, and soon. The only beneficiaries of Carole's clinging to power with a divided party are the "BC Liberals". Carole must either step down and make way for a new leader, or put her leadership to a confidence vote as Jenny Kwan has called for.

If Carole wins a one member, one vote confidence vote, so be it. We will at least be somewhat united around her, whatever we think of her abilities. If she loses the vote, as I expect she will, the decks will be cleared for new leadership candidates to put their names forward, including some MLA's who are sticking by her for the present or who actually oppose her but don't have the spine to stand up and be counted. Which tells us what kind of leadership we could expect from them!

Jenny Kwan and Corky Evans have put their money where their mouth is, as the saying goes, and we could count on them to be straight talking charismatic leaders. Hopefully one of them will rise to the challenge, whatever the personal cost to their lives, after already giving so much of themselves to "public service" in the best sense of the phrase.

Bob Strachen, Dave Barrett, and Mike Harcourt all knew when their time was up and did the right thing. How about it, Carole?

The only thing that will resolve this now, is Carole's resignation. They can try to patch together whatever backroom deal they like - it will not work. The cat is out of the bag and try as you might, there's no putting the cat back in.

What a disgrace, James calls a foolish "Purge Meeting" and chickens out herself at the last minute.

Can you imagine this person as the leader of our province?

She has the decision making power and the backbone of Neville Chamberlain.

"PEACE IN OUR TIME" eh Carole!

Ray I, are you a PAB? Would you prefer there be a dictatorship like the "BOBBLE HEADS" have on the other side of the floor? People who decide not to fight in public are called "democratic" and settle their differences through negotiation. Something the "BOBBLE HEADS" in the FIBeral party don't understand. If you really want something to laugh at, look at the 4 (so far) leadership candidates for the FIBerals. All were in on cabinet decisions to sell BC Rail, dismember BC Hydro, cut funding to the Medical Services Plan & education, gut the social services plan for the poor and it goes on and on.

Instead one announces he'll increase funding for the arts, the others say they'll do a good job. Wow, I guess we should all believe them. Afterall look what they have done for the last 10 years. Incase you don't recall Ray I, I'll give you a short refresher. They either didn't implement one election promise and broke all the rest. Now that's a party I should trust?....... Nope, never. Just live in your little bobble head world Ray I. You'll have lots of friends once the election is over.

This party is inept. Even if Carol is not the leader this party has marked its doom as a loser in the next election. Our province deserves a much better opposition party. I believe not only Carole needs to go but get rid of Moe and any other from that era that is tainted.

I note the 'legal' fight in the Ida Chong Recall campaign - where the NDP's lawyers are threatening to sue a Victoria radio station for airing ads saying the NDP is behind the Recall campaign - and the proponent, though an NDP supporter asserts that there are (obviously) people from all persuasians involved in it.

The law as I understand it includes direct inferences as potential libel, and the Elections BC law says an organization may NOT be the proponent in the Recall.

If I were the NDP I would sue - get the affidavit of the proponent and affidavit another dozen workers (not affiliated with NDP) - and get a letter from Elections BC asserting the Recall law and to their knowledge nor organization as defined by that Act is involved with the Recall (or they would not have approved it, or alternatively have not received a complaint from Ida Chong or the BC Liberal Party. (Law by process of elimination).

This would compel the BC Liberals to prove that the NDP is behind the Recall (onus). Politically, the NDP could pour gasoline on the BC Liberals as serial liars -- at will (HST) --- and news through the leadership contenders who are trying to distance themselves from that well earned reputation---not to mention the distraction from internal squabbles.
