George Abbott unveils $12-million campaign promise on school playgrounds

Comments

B.C. Liberal leadership candidate George Abbott has promised to introduce a $12-million school-playground program if he becomes the next premier.

Under the proposal, the funds would be available from the Ministry of Education over three years starting in 2011. Parent Advisory Councils or, in some cases, local service groups could ask for grants of as much as $20,000, with no requirement for matching funds.

In a campaign statement released today (December 7), Abbott says playgrounds are key to early development and learning for children. The former cabinet minister adds government must be involved in funding efforts to renew aging playground facilities.

Abbott is one of four contenders seeking to become the next leader of the provincial Liberal party. The winning candidate will succeed Gordon Campbell as premier.

The party’s leadership convention is set for February 26, 2011.

Just where are you going to come up with that kind of money? We're broke if you listen to the minister of education. Are you canceling Mr Gordy boys pension?

This is the guy who wants to move the HST referendum back from Sept to June. Basically he feels everything about the HST was done right on behalf of the liberals except the referendum should be in June instead of Sept. What a joke. I know he said "it wasnt introduced right", but even with the 700,000 signatures against it he still doesnt have to say "if im elected I will kill the HST and not was 30 million on a referendum. Really, what would the referendum in June tell him that the petition did not?

Another slimy Liberal.

How many times does the BC Liberal government have to kick you in the snake before you begin to get it?

Here is a preview for you if this schmuck gets elected:

"It was not on my radar, I'm going to slash social spending, sell our resources to multinationals and you the people are going to pay even more of the corporate tax share"

PAC lady
Our PAC wanted to buy a playground from a local manufacturer out of Langley, BC.... It stopped there, we had no choice but to deal with the school board and their US suppliers.
Why is that???
The PAC raises the money and we want to buy Canadian made product.

International Play Company Inc. (“IPC”) is very pleased to learn that BC has decided to invest in playgrounds. We design, manufacture and install indoor and outdoor play structures worldwide, from our plant in Langley BC. We are a BC company that has been in business for over 10 years and we employ approximately 45 people. Most of our suppliers are also local. We’ve noticed over the years that school boards and other not-for-profit entities based in BC have tended to purchase play structures from foreign suppliers, when expertise, quality and competitive pricing are available locally. This announcement commits significant taxpayer dollars for much needed upgrades to our playgrounds. It is our hope that those involved in the vendor selection process take their responsibility seriously and perform a thorough review of the proposals received, which will likely include bids from local vendors, like IPC.
