First Spider-Man image of Andrew Garfield in costume

Columbia Pictures has released the first picture of Andrew Garfield as the new Spider-Man for the franchise reboot.

You may remember Garfield as the sensitive Tommy in Never Let Me Go or as Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network. Garfield takes over the role previously played by Tobey Macguire, who played the web slinger in the Sam Raimi–directed trilogy.

The image reveals a somewhat more subtly detailed, slightly muted Spider-Man costume compared to the one worn by Tobey Maguire. Blue appears much more prominently, with less red than the Maguire costume. The web detail on this new outfit is also less overt. (Click on the image for an enlargement.)

But fans will have to wait quite a long time to see what the film is like. It's not released until July 3, 2012.

What do you think of the new duds?
