Sign of a spreading Arab insurrection: hashtags for future revolutions

It's too early to say if the Tunisian revolution will be the catalyst leading to the fall of several other Arab dictatorships.

But a tweet this weekend by New York-based NBC digital reporter Rima Abdelkader suggests that Egypt won't be the last Middle Eastern country where protests occur.

The Egyptian protests began on January 25, which is why "#Jan25" is a common hashtag for tweets about the growing revolution in that country.

Abdelkaer's tweet states: "revolution-inspired hashtag dates already being planned for the rest of the Arab world - Sudan #Jan30 Yemen #Feb3 Syria #Feb5 Algeria #Feb12".

If poor young Arabs rise up against their governments in Sudan, Yemen, Syria, and Algeria on those dates, it will indicate once again that it's tougher for dictatorial regimes to keep a lid on protests in the digital world.

This is starting to look like the Arab version of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The hashtag dates also allow those threatened Arab regimes to be prepared by shutting down their internet access in advance of those dates. Once one knows how to play the game, one can win as well.
