Egyptian Canadians and other supporters of the uprising in Egypt gathered for a rally this afternoon (February 5) in downtown Vancouver.

Speakers at Library Square expressed solidarity with protesters in Egypt, demanded President Hosni Mubarak resign immediately, and slammed Prime Minister Stephen Harper's response to the unrest.

One of the chants sounded at the rally was, "Egypt, Egypt will be free, from the Nile to the sea."

NDP deputy leader Libby Davies and Charles Demers of the StopWar coalition were among the speakers.

With a bit more framing effort you could make us belive there were at least a huge crowd of 25 people "demanding"... LOL

My partner and I just returned from five days in Cairo. Visited Tahrir Square several times and always felt warmly welcomed; even offered food and water by protesters who appreciated our support. It was a very different situation on the streets of Cairo, where pro-Mubarak mobs harassed and intimated foreigners and launched many violent attacks on the protesters, I encourage everyone to stand with the protesters -- one option is to sign an online appeal through Amnesty International at http://www.amnesty.ca/iwriteforjustice/

Seemed like about 250 people were there. Various interested people were attending from many different cultures. Very spirited and delightful chants! A good time was had by all!

Especially liked the old favourite chant The People United Will Never Be Defeated ;-)
