Rafe Mair inquires about a job on CKNW Radio

With tongue planted firmly in cheek, broadcaster and former cabinet minister Rafe Mair has applied to get back on the airwaves on CKNW Radio.

Today (March 11), Mair wrote to CKNW program director Tom Plasteras to apply for a job hosting the afternoon show.

"I have considerable experience over more than 30 years being a Michener laureate, recipient of the Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award and I am in the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame," Mair noted at the start of his letter.

CKNW fired Mair as a hot-line radio host in 2003, even though he was attracting huge ratings. It came following a dispute with his producer, Dallas Brodie, who complained about him using profanity.

As a radio host, Mair also enraged some in the business community with his steadfast opposition to fish farming.

In his recent letter to Plasteras, Mair wrote that he believes he fulfills all of the necessary qualifications laid down for the job, "with the possible exception of collegiality".

He also stated that he would be willing to work for the same amount or less than the current host.

"I would be delighted to meet you and discuss this matter...however I will require a permission in writing from the President of CKNW before I'm allowed on the 20th or 21st floor of the Toronto-Dominion Bank Building," Mair quipped at the end of his letter.

Rafe pounded the Salmon Farming industry - but he also pounded the NDP Clarke government - I listend to his show every morning on my way to my office - and had the show on in the office.

My publishing business was ironically right next to Phil Hochstein's ICBA.

Though the name of the mental disorder in the DSM IV for those who pay attention to corporate media escapes me at the moment, remember to some compassion when you meet them: check their medi-alert bracelet, ask if they're taking their meds.

Rafe is a class act and of very high integrity, knowledege, and intelligence. The bonus is he is entertaining too. CKNW might be too biased to the corporate agenda to give him a job though.

Doubt that will happen, mind you CKNW is in a very embarrassing situation, just yesterday a junior (?) producer banned Alex T. from appearing with Simi Sara because he has unpleasant things to say. Now he has some really unpleasant things to say.

What the hell they are teaching at BCIT nowadays? Censorship 101?

Bill Boring is almost done, if his slow pitches get any slower, someone had better check his pulse. Even a pace maker could not bring him back to life.

In fact, NW is done and only kept alive by Liberal supporters who relish their radio L-I-B-E-R-A-L.

Mind you, if Rafe by some miracle or desperation on the part of NW, does get back on, Charlie and Eye will probably be guests! Ah....fame so fleeting.

First off rafe would have to get someone else to hold his notes so he could read them. The man shakes so bad he could thread a sewing machine while it was running. Second of all they would have to post a "no female employee's zone" around him.
