Hedy Fry has been reelected in Vancouver Centre for the seventh time, winning one of just two Liberal seats in B.C.

But despite devastating seat losses for the Liberals across the country Monday (May 2), the long-time MP says her party will rebuild.

“The Liberals have been one of the oldest parties in this country...we are a strong party, we are a historic party in this country,” she told reporters at the Junction on Davie Street late Monday evening. “We will rebuild.”

However, Fry conceded the party may have to reassess its approach.

"I think tonight perhaps as a Liberal what we all learned is that our party needs to...look at what the country has told us," she said. “Perhaps as Liberals we need to sit down and talk about where we need to change, what we need to do differently, how we need to build maybe a different kind of party.”

Fry thanked Vancouver Centre residents for what she called a “close shave” win in the riding.

"They've put their trust in me for almost 18 years and now they've given me one more kick at the can," she said.

Fry expressed concern over the Conservative majority government.

“Unfortunately, what I heard from everyone on the streets was they did not want a Harper majority,” said Fry.

“Tomorrow, we have one, and I think it means that the opposition parties are going to have to work harder than ever to try and ensure that our democracy prevails, that Mr Harper with his majority government does not tread on the things that we hold dearly in this country.”

Earlier in the evening, a small and subdued crowd of Liberal supporters gathered at a hotel in downtown Vancouver as election results came in.

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff, who lost his own seat in Etobicoke-Lakeshore, called his party's defeat historic.

Fry and Vancouver-Quadra incumbent Joyce Murray were the only Liberal MPs to maintain their seats in B.C.

Two lonely Liberals who will Hedy and Joyce talk to in Ottawa well they brought it upon themselves with Chretien. After all these years in the hinter land BC can now seek revenge on the Liberals. And clean out their policies.
