Gordon Campbell’s name conspicuously absent from Insite letter

Former premier Gordon Campbell rarely passed up an opportunity to big himself up, to use an English expression of choice.

However, with five past Vancouver mayors signing off on a letter urging Prime Minister Stephen Harper to stop trying to shut down Insite, guess who’s not on that list of names?

Gordon Muir Campbell is not there, though he occupied that mayor’s chair from 1986 until 1993. Mayor Gregor Robertson, elected in 2008, kicked off the initiative to support Canada’s only supervised-injection site, according to his executive assistant, Kevin Quinlan.

Robertson’s signature is up top, and he was successful in getting former mayors Sam Sullivan (2005-2008), Larry Campbell (2002-2005), Philip Owen (1993-2002), Mike Harcourt (1980-1986) and Art Philips (1972-1976) to sign off.

And did they try and get Gordo?

“We did, yes,” Quinlan said today (May 12). “We reached out to him, but we weren’t able to contact him. We didn’t hear anything. My understanding is he’s away; he’s out of the country.”

Given the historic nature of this precedent-setting case, which has now gone all the way up to the Supreme Court of Canada, you’d think Gordo would pick a better time to leave the environs of the Best Place on Earth.

If Quinlan told you Mayor Fauntelroy's farts smelled like roses I suppose you'd print that too.

Seeing his face makes me want to barf! There's only two other faces in the world that make me want to puke more and that's Harper's and Crusty's.

Simple exercise. Google inside and Gordon Campbell and see his support. Very lazy, sloppy journalism.

Of course Campbell's name isn't on the list. His best buddy Harper is closing the site down. We all know the BC Liberals work for Harper. It was said, Harper was taking Campbell to work for him, down east. Perish the thought of, two monsters in the east to contend with.

      Nathaniel and "Skippy":

A quick perusal of the blog item will reveal that the Georgia Straight neither researched, wrote, nor delivered the Insite letter to Stephen Harper's office.

      Have a nice day.

      @RonS

I agree with you, but there is another name I would include in that group. Brian Mulroney's name and face still make me want to retch.

That is an appropriate picture of Gordo, for this article.

The issue isn't that about Campbell expressing support for Insite, which he obviously has. The issue is that he didn't sign the letter.

Gordo and the BC Provincial government has already shown it's support for Insite. This letter was specfic to the SC hearing. As a result, it appears to be time sensitive. They tried to reach him but could not find him. Mr Burrows, you imply by your post here that this insite issue should be the foremost thing on Mr Campbell's mind. Hell you all ran him out of politics. You cast your hatred and anger at him even when he is not in office. If he is spending a few weeks, months or years in Hawaii having mai tais with Fred and Kathy who the fuck cares. He owes you nothing at this time.

You wonder why we have such peaches as Christy Clark and Adrian Dix vie for the premiership of this province. If you look at the track record or waste bin, the only one that has any credibility had to break his neck to do so.

"Oh I hate his picture, it makes me want to puke" Get over yourselves already. Perhaps the left of centre would have some hope if its leaders and supporter had better argument than this imbecile tripe that flows out of your mouths..
