There were hundreds of submissions in our contest to name our new blog, but only one was chosen: Blogra.

The woman who devised the winning entry, Elizabeth, explains it this way: “I sat down and thought of what I see in the Georgia Straight. And I’ve heard people say it’s a David and Goliath thing, with the Straight being David. That’s not accurate. David is too small. The Straight is bigger than that.”

Elizabeth went on to say that others see the Straight as a gargantuan “monster”. But she disagrees with that characterization, because monsters are destroyers rather than protectors of the public.

“These people don’t look at what it’s doing,” she said.

In Elizabeth’s eyes, the Straight is often misunderstood. She says it's mistaken as either David or a monster.

“It’s neither,” Elizabeth maintains. “And I love that it fights the good fight. It sounds crazy, I know, but that’s how I see the Straight.”

Blogra won’t swallow you whole like the Dilophosauruses or Tyrannosauruses in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. But it might chew off the occasional arm. After all, every blog needs some bite.

I enjoy reading the Straight online, but I think Blogra is a terrible name and will do everything I can to suppress it from my consciousness when I visit.

Absolutely deplore it...what's wrong with you people? There were a few great suggestions.,,Blogra? Makes me think of a disease or Viagra. Both nasty.

Pretty sure the Straight hasn't had any kind of bite for as far back as I can remember. Now they are stuck between trying to be nice enough to be mainstream while having absolutely to impact anymore. All you have to do is take one look at their last sex issue to know just what they consider "racy".

The Georgia Straight needs to give its head a shake. I took a pass on them when they ran a piece about a 'benefit' for a bunch of hipsters on Commerical Drive to help pay their rent while an actual benefit to send instruments to musicians in Cuba was happening that week. The Straight was sent three press releases aboutit but they covered their friends poverty porn 'help us pay rent because I don't make enough money working at a coffee shop' thing instead. Pathetic.
