Actor Jay Brazeau suffers stroke during Arts Club performance
Actor Jay Brazeau suffered a stroke last night while on the Arts Club Theatre stage.
"During last night’s preview performance of Hairspray, Jay Brazeau experienced a minor stroke and the performance was cancelled," Arts Club publicist Nicole McLuckie wrote in a message today. "He is expected to fully recover and return to the run at a later date. We are currently rehearsing our understudy and performances will continue tomorrow evening. We wish Jay a speedy recovery and look forward to his return."
Brazeau, 57, is a beloved figure on the Canadian stage whose awards include seven Jessie Awards, a Pittsburgh Press Critic’s Award, The Vancouver Film Critics Circle Award, and the B.C. Entertainment Hall of Fame.
He was playing the role of Edna Turnblad, traditionally played by a man, in Hairspray.
