Andy Toth to step in for Jay Brazeau in Arts Club's Hairspray

Actor-director Andy Toth is stepping in to play Edna Turnblad in the Arts Club Theatre’s production of Hairspray. Toth is taking over for Jay Brazeau, who suffered a minor stroke about 30 minutes into last night’s preview performance.

“Andy will be stepping into the role,” Arts Club publicist Nicole McLuckie told the Straight by phone. “They’re rehearsing as we speak and we’re really excited to have him stepping into the part. He’s a pretty amazing actor in his own right.”

The show will resume tomorrow [May 14] evening at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, said McLuckie, adding that Brazeau was determined to return to the run at a later date.

“Jay’s a trouper. He’ll be back. It’s just a matter of when,” she said. “He feels like he’s let down his cast”¦. But the show must go on, and it will, and he’ll be back.”
