NPA mayoral candidate Suzanne Anton calls for an inquiry into Vancouver's hockey riot

NPA councillor and mayoral candidate Suzanne Anton issued the following statement about the downtown Vancouver riot after Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final:

I am deeply saddened at the black eye and damage caused to Vancouver by hooligans in our city's downtown core. Our first concern should be the safety of our citizens and of our downtown businesses, and we thank the police, fire fighters and our front line health workers for their response.

What has happened this evening does not represent Vancouverites, who are proud sports fans as demonstrated last year during the Olympics. These events are caused by groups of troublemakers.

The Mayor of Vancouver with the assistance of the Chief of Police must call an immediate inquiry into the events leading up to tonight's post-game disorder. We must hold those who have caused wanton damage to private and public property to account, prosecute them to the full extent of the law, and make recommendations to prevent such occurrences in future.

Really? Dragging this into the civic election? There is blame a plenty to go around and some charges to lay but putting it all on the mayor in a civic election is a sad, desperate act by a second rate politician.

Gimme a break James G. What kind of thing should be "dragged "into a civic election if not the complete trashing of our city and its reputation by poor planning. Gregor Robertson showed an incredible amlount of stupidity and naivete in encouraging so many people to come downtown. He's the second rate politician here.

Kind of have to agree with James and Crompton, at least lets get the body into the ground, then we can sort out the fingerpointing. It truly does smell of political opportunism on her part and certainly not a smart move.

Ready to pounce on any headline and make it all about her is what is sad. It is part of a pattern of being not really committed to anything other than her own political career, hence the second-rate aspect. Ms. Anton actually showed more open-mindedness than any other NPA city councilor at one time and that is the reason she held on during the Vision sweep. A lot has been sacrificed since than and I can only wonder who she gets political advice from, perhaps the federal Liberals? Given the record so far, I expect Ms. Anton to call a press conference denouncing some city councilors for rashly judging council for the riots.

I agree with Charlie. Vancouver is a World Class City and this riot is a debacle. In any other serious City - New York - Los Angeles --- in an election year - forget about it - I would be on the Mayor, the Premier and the Police Chief - it has nothing to do with opportunism - you need World Class leadership in a World Class city.

This was lightweight leadership - everyone knows it - get on with the political fight - its an election year - who else misses the metaphor of the battle lines being drawn?
