The Cheaper Show invades Vancouver

Did you notice a particular emptiness to the city this weekend? No, it's not just because we're still mourning our hockey losses. Saturday's quietness can only be attributed to the Cheaper Show, which is where all of Vancouver was according to some accounts.

Thanks to photographer Andrew Chin for supplying us with shots of the eager crowds and amazing space.

Charging cover to shop for art? Which is being hosted by a huge Real Estate Developer?? Welcome to Vancouver...

You mean charging cover so they can give 100% of the art sales to the artists and has nothing more to do with a real estate developer then renting the space from them? Welcome to reality.

Can't deny that for certain artists and art consumers, the Cheaper Show is very much a good thing. But you know, a surprisingly large number of art shows happen in this city all the time and even if you combined them all, they'd never receive 1/100th of the hype as this one. You have to wonder why that's so. It's a bit sad that the only way to make an art show palatable to public discussion is to frame it as some kind of frantic Black Friday sales event. Yes, welcome to Vancouver indeed.

The constant whining from BC's art community.... Pfft is right. This show is awesome and the fact that they have to "sell out" a little bit is completely the right thing to do. Rather than having my tax dollars go down some bottomless pit of "community theatre" or something, this is real art, surviving on its own, without my tax dollars supporting it. Bravo Cheaper Show!

The show is about exposure, networking and good times. The fact that the show is run by volunteers and a small staff (who get compensated very little for the amount of effort given) a $10 cover is nothing considering the amazing quality of event. Hats off again for bringing people in mass to enjoy ART!!!
