Violent clashes between Greek police and protesters

Greece has been gripped by a general strike this week, with citizens protesting austerity measures aimed at dealing with the country's debt crisis.

Amnesty International has called on police not to use "excessive force" on protesters, noting that witnesses and footage point to the "repeated use" of such force.

The human-right organization's representatives have reported seeing police officers beating peaceful protesters in Syntagma square in Athens. Plenty of tear gas has been fired into crowds.

These two videos show clashes between police and demonstrators. The first video begins with a riot cop striking the head of a protester with a baton.
