Meryl Streep channels Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady

She’s tackled chef Julia Child; the-dingo-ate-my-baby Lindy Chamberlain; accused Commie spy Ethel Rosenberg; and gave a thinly veiled portrayal of Vogue dragon-lady-in-chief Anna Wintour.

Now Meryl Streep has transformed herself into yet another formidable woman: the Iron Lady herself, Margaret Thatcher. The trailer for the 20th Century Fox biography of the much-reviled former British Tory PM has been released. It’s called—what else?—the Iron Lady, and it's coming to screens January 2012.

Streep appears to be in fine form, as usual, though judging from this clip, she may be enjoying being Maggie a little too much. I mean, really, how often did Thatcher ever crack a smile—or a joke, for that matter?

Merryl Streep will probably get another Oscar for the Thatcher role. Oscar voting members or the "Honorable Members of the Academy" (that includes comedian Russell Brand - husband of Katy Perry) , are so besotted with the British Monarchy, (because they aspire to be royalties themselves even in Rodeo Drive or Beverly Hills only) that they are willing to give an Oscar to anything British resembling an artfully made film like "The Kings Speech".

I am sooo tired of watching World War ll movies of German officers portrayed by British actors with British accents. And so Oscar Awardee Colin Firth had a French film titled "The Year of The Pig" where he was portraying a French lawyer with an English accent mind you. Did this French Lawyer went to Oxford for his law degree? I don't know. But such is your fate if you watch late night tv and what your cable provider is showing are preachers, ginsu knife hawkers, weight loss systems, and anti-aging skin formulas. Alas, not even a raunchy tv movie rated "Mature".
