Poet laureate Brad Cran announces the ambitious Vancouver 125 Poetry Conference

Percy Bysshe Shelley, in one of his fits of modesty, once called poets “the unacknowledged legislators of the world”. If that’s so, we’re about to host the equivalent of a geopolitical summit.

Brad Cran, now in the home stretch of his term as the city’s second poet laureate, today announced the details of the Vancouver 125 Poetry Conference, which will bring acclaimed and cutting-edge poets from across North America to our town for an ambitious four-day event. The conference is scheduled for October 19 to 22, to run alongside this year’s Vancouver International Writers and Readers Festival.

The lineup—which includes celebrated American poet Fanny Howe and Governor General’s Award–winner Don McKay—spans the art form. It’ll gather not only to exchange ideas in seminars on poetry’s present and future, but to engage readers with a series of performances and public events.

Well done Mr. Cran. I hope this will stimulate the economy, create jobs for all British Columbians, and help to make BC even MORE spectacular. Only art can do that, it has that power.
