Prime Minister Stephen Harper's statement on NDP leader Jack Layton's death

      Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued this statement today (August 22) following the death of Jack Layton:

      I was deeply saddened to learn this morning of the death of Jack Layton.

      When I last spoke with Jack following his announcement in July, I wished him well and he told me he'd be seeing me in the House of Commons in the Fall.

      This, sadly, will no longer come to pass.

      On behalf of all Canadians, I salute Jack’s contribution to public life, a contribution that will be sorely missed.

      I know one thing: Jack gave his fight against cancer everything he had. Indeed, Jack never backed down from any fight.

      To his wife Olivia, his family, and to his colleagues and friends, Laureen and I offer our heartfelt condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time.

      A state funeral is in order for the most Trusted and Loved Canadian Hero, Mr Jack Layton. This great man got more votes from Canadians than our Prime Minister showing all he is, and was, greatly loved by Canadians from all walks and stations in Life. A STATE FUNERAL for a GREAT STATESMAN.

      Mr. Layton was a GREAT CANADIAN -- I am hoping that the state funeral will be held in Ottawa and a torch-like flame lit to commemorate his great contribution to this country and the ideals and principles that he so courageously fought for and upheld. I hope that the ceremony will reflect the incredible faith, courage, kindness, and optimism of this GREAT HUMAN BEING, regardless of where we stand, if anywhere, on the political spectrum. Jack was a sincere and compassionate man who cared and stood for us all and now, in solemn remembrance, we stand for him. We will miss his precious honesty, intelligence, and wisdom - We have lost a GREAT LEADER but his GREAT SPIRIT will live on in our hearts. We know that you are smiling down from Heaven Jack--We love you with all of our hearts and shall never forget what you have done!
