Occupy Wall Street Day 6: Protesters honour Troy Davis, Keith Olbermann sounds off, Chicago gets in on the action

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Wednesday (September 21) was a big day for Liberty Plaza.

That was the day the state of Georgia executed Troy Davis, a man who was found guilty of killing a police officer, even though there was no physical evidence linking him to the crime and most of the eyewitnesses later recanted their statements. Amid a downpour, Occupy Wall Street protesters read Davis's last statement, held a minute of silence, and chanted "We are Troy Davis".

When it's not raining, and the U.S. isn't executing people, life for the Wall Street protesters is actually kind of festival-like. There are tables set up with food and beverages, singing, dancing, drumming, teach-ins, and sign making. At one point in the video below, a few members of the NYPD join in the morning march.

The mainstream media is starting to pick up the story. Keith Olbermann talked about the protests on his show last night (September 21) and spoke with author Will Bunch, who acknowledged that the action is "a sign of the deep unrest". Olbermann also did an excellent job of drawing attention to the revolting coverage of the event, which has either been making fun of the protesters or completely ignoring it. Watch the piece below.

Other cities are starting to notice as well. There is a demonstration planned for September 23 in Chicago at the Sears/Willis Tower.

Read an interview with Marisa Holmes, an Occupy Wall Street protester, who speaks about the goals of the protest, the increasing militarization of New York City, and the stratification of wealth.

      A simple guy

I have lived in the south for years now but am still amazed every day. The ghost of slavery and racism still hangs over the south and mentally cripples the thinking of southerners both black and white. Southerners has grown blind to humanity, if that humanity is found in a person of a different skin color. All thinking begins and ends in skin color. It seems character, talent, genius cannot be honored unless found in people that have your same skin color. Whites believe that they have privilege which they have not really earned, based not on genius or talent, but simply because of pale skin, and blacks are marginalized not because of any innate deficiency, but solely because of dark skin. I see lots of whites who are not particularly smart or talented, and lot of blacks who are not really inadequate or evil. Mostly just people trying to get by. Anyone who questions this twisted society based on color is cast out. The irony is genetically blacks and whites all over the world have DNA which is 99.9% the same……….hmmmm…..think about that.....maybe God is trying to tell us all something…..

As much as a certain segment of society chooses to combat what they perceive to be the gaming of society by entrenched power interests perhaps we ought to ask the uncomfortable question- does anyone then really care anymore? And if they did, how is it that the movement that started off with 5000 members last weekend has dwindled to less than 200 come this weekend? After all the concerns of the ‘occupy wall street’ group are legitimate ones with deep consequences.
