Vancouver’s Contemporary Art Gallery is calling on all smartphone users to help it with its latest participatory off-site project.

Inspired by artist Federico Herrero’s colourful new CAG facade, entitled Vibrantes, the project will enable visitors to view a virtual mural around the gallery and in nearby streets, using their smartphone. Viewers will also generate their own digital murals across the city’s buildings, using blocks of colour visible through a special app.

The blocks of colour available will change depending on the position and viewpoint of participants, so no two creations will be alike. Once the digital paintings are created, they can be shared through Twitter under the hashtag #CAGOFFSITE. All images will be credited and published by the CAG on its blog and Facebook page.

By navigating the virtual murals, visitors can also unlock embadded content through their smartphone. It all starts at the CAG this Saturday (December 3) at 3 p.m., where every participaing will receive a coloured vinyl shape inspired by Herrero’s work.
