City calls on artists to contribute ideas for arts and culture advisory committee

By Jessica Werb,

One facet of Vision Vancouver’s arts platform looks to be coming together. The City of Vancouver has put out a call for input on the creation of an Arts and Culture Advisory Committee.

The city is asking the arts and culture community to sign up for one of two workshops to discuss membership, selection criteria, and priorities for the committee over the next three years. The committee, once established, will be tasked with developing a strategy and process for responding to arts and culture organizations; improving communications within the arts and culture community; optimizing cultural toursim; developing new and enhancing existing arts partnerships; and providing input into key programs such as grants, public art, and cultural facilities.

In October, Vision Vancouver’s arts platform included the creation of an artists-lead arts advisory committee. In 2008, the party made an unfulfilled pledge to create an arms-length arts council, but Councillor Heather Deal said those plans were scrapped in favour of the advisory committee now being established.

In July, Deal’s motion to “bring forward recommendations for the establishment of a single advisory council on the arts and culture” was approved by council.

The two workshops will take place Friday, January 13, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Cultch, and Monday, January 16, 2012, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Arts Club Theatre. Click on either date to register.

Great idea! Too bad this doesnt allow any 9-5ers like myself to contribute.

This should be (at least) a Metro Vancouver committee, to represent the actual, larger audience base for the the arts on offer in the City of Vancouver.

With Christy Palin playing her gambling money close to the vest, and Kim Jong-steve funding Canada's walk of shame, enlightened arts policies kinda look like they will have to come at the municipal and regional level.

Bwaaa- there is an evening session on Monday, January 16 that the 9-5'ers, like you and I, will be able to attend.

Who will be chosen to serve on this committee, and by whom? Vision Vancouver Councillors control the majority on the nomination committee that screens applicants. Will anyone who is not closely connected to Vision have a chance at serving on this committee? Case in point is WEMAC (West End Mayor's Advisory Committee), the majority of who were Vision Vancouver insiders. The Arts & Culture Advisory Committee needs to be de-politicized in order to be effective, legitimate and independent.
