New standards of care introduced for B.C. sled dog industry

New provincial regulations and industry guidelines have been introduced as part of an effort to protect sled dogs in B.C.

The province today (February 20) announced the standards of care regulation includes legal requirements around sled dog containment, health, working conditions, and euthanasia.

The related Sled Dog Code of Practice includes best practice recommendations for commercial and recreational operators related to housing, husbandry, nutrition, and other areas.

A working group made up of industry representatives, veterinarians, animal-rights advocates, academics, and government staff helped create the standards and code.

The move comes more than a year after reports surfaced that a mass killing of Whistler sled dogs took place shortly after the 2010 Winter Olympics.

a sideshow attraction

The dogs were killed because the Olympics were about cash. Once the dogs had served their purpose - as a sideshow attraction - they were disposable.

Creating a bylaw will do nothing to prevent similar events from happening the next time a neocon government wants to throw a party for the elite cronies.

How about setting new standards for care homes and the prices charged seniors for rent. Most of them have nothing left at the end of the month for themselves.
