3:01 Pick Me Up: Nina Hagen

Let’s face it: 3 p.m. is the cruellest time of the workday. The morning latte has worn off, and the post-lunch crash has you staggering around like an extra from a George A. Romero flick. That’s why, each weekday at 3:01 p.m., we present you with a video hand-picked to kick-start your heart. If the following clip doesn’t bring you temporarily back to life and help get you through the rest of the afternoon, chances are you’re dead inside.

Today’s offering: Based on this full-on freakout, the drugs must have been about a million times better back in the ’80s Eat your heart out Lady Gaga.

Fabulous Nina! I've been a fan forever. The real article, femme eccentric, performance artist with an operatic voice, a loon.

It's not that I begrudge Gaga her success flogging dull dance tunes. It is that she does not acknowledge the fact that she largely apes Hagen, right down to her male personage, and does it poorly for the most part, with no discernible nod to her vastly more talented predecessor.

She didn't sing this when she played the Commodore in '05. Needless to say, that was a major letdown. This has always been my favourite Nina Hagen song.
