3:01 Pick Me Up: Germs

Unless you have the good fortune to be unemployed or working as a ditch-digger, 3 p.m. is the cruellest time of the workday. The morning latte has worn off, and the post-lunch crash has you desperately reaching for the J. Peterman Urban Sombrero. To get you through the rest of the afternoon, you have a choice. You can raid the vending machine for an old-fashioned (not to mention life-shortening) white-sugar injection. Or you can kick-start your heart by cueing up one of the over-adrenalized videos we carefully hand-select each day at 3:01 p.m. If the following clip doesn’t bring you temporarily back to life, chances are you’re dead inside. Now plug in those earphones and fucking crank it.

Today’s offering: Don’t do drugs kids. Unless, that is, you want to end up an icon like Darby Crash, in which case we guess maybe it's okay. (By the way, that is indeed Pat Smear, later of Nirvana, and now of the Foo Fighters, on guitar. Take a bow for noticing).

Y'know where the Germs pop up, at least sonically? William Friedkin's controversial gay S&M thriller Cruising, starring Al Pacino. According to IMDB trivia, they recorded five or so songs expressly for the film; only one, "Lion's Share," is in it. Best song in the movie is Willy DeVille's "It's So Easy," though - check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y02pZKHFHaQ

"Somebody Got Murdered" by the Clash was also recorded for (but not used in) Cruising.

Manimal seemed like a great show when I was 10. In retrospect, I had terrible taste.

Actually, those special effects are pretty cool, all things considered. How do I not know about this show?

Mack - I had no idea re: "Somebody Got Murdered!"
