City announces plan to turn Taylor Manor into a supportive-housing project

A historic building named after one of the city's most legendary mayors may be turned into a supportive-housing complex for people with mental illness.

The City of Vancouver has announced that up to 56 people could live at Taylor Manor at Boundary Road and Adanac Street, thanks to a combination of funders.

An anonymous benefactor will contribute operational funding, according to a city news release. The $14-million renovation will be financed, in part, by Streetohome Foundation, Vancity, and the Carrerisi Foundation.

The building was constructed in 1915 and is named after Louis Taylor, who served as mayor from 1910 to 1912, 1915, and from 1924 to 1934.

The Kettle Friendship Society hopes to operate the project.

A public open house is scheduled on July 12 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Adanac Housing Co-op (3550 Adanac Street).

I would like to see some accurate information on Vancouver's Homeless folks. The last numbers I heard were 90% of Vancouver's street folks are not from BC and upwards of 30 - 40% are illegal immigrants.

Lots from the Good Old US of A.

Creating a decent home for 56 people is a drop in the bucket.

We need a National Program to put an end to the 1 - 2 thousand folks who are street people, drug addicts and to send back to the Provinces and Countries these folks came from.

East Hastings Street is a National disgrace and a tribute to people, who believe, you have the right to commit suicide in public.

These folks need help, consider it a Christian duty.

56 homes is better than none, and therefore a very good thing.

Even better is the fact that Taylor Manor is miles from the DTES. It is essential to the recovery of these people that they get out of the DTES -- physically, psychically. If they stay there, they will never be released from the exploitation of the drug dealers and the pimps, and those who enable them.

If they go back to the DTES, they will never escape from the craziness on the streets that they see every day. The addicts will go back to their clubhouse on Hastings, and call it a "lifestyle choice".

There are some people who overlook the destruction caused by the dealers, the pimps, the rationalizers of psychotic behavior. They want to feed the ghetto.

Taylor Manor is a way forward. It will be a refuge for 56 people. It will inspire others to look for the same safe harbour, miles from the maelstrom.

Use the money to house the displaced Dt east-side residents caused be this ongoing development which is disperspersing them toward the adanac and boundry area.East hastings and the trans canada high way are already great places to donate to meridian walkers. we get ride of our empty beer cans this way, quite handy. I lived in many downtown eastside hotels the issue is ratio. You need 80% functioning to 20% non- functioning. It is helping me in my current coop. The Kettle Friendship Society should not be trusted to run housing projects. Look what happent to the portland hotel sociaty. I went back to one of there hotels and they raised the rent for the working poor leaving us welfare bums in strict evil sro's managed by uneducated ass holes who id your fuck buddy for the night, how intrusive to live in a prison and pay for it.
