The 21 Best Horror Flicks of the 21st Century (so far)

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Last week I posted a blog called The 40 Worst Horror Flicks of the 21st Century (so far), in which I listed 40 of the crappiest fright flicks I've had the displeasure of seeing since Y2K (which was a pretty crappy fright flick itself, if you think about it).

Now that everyone's had a good chance to watch all of those movies to see if I was right or not, I figured I'd stop bein' a jerk and treat horror freaks to a list that's actually semi-useful.

So here's my rundown of the 21 Best Horror Flicks of the 21st Century (so far). You'll notice that there's 19 less titles here than there was on the list of movies nobody'd want to see. Tough titty. It's not my fault Hollywood cranks out so few good ones in a 12-year period.

      Let the Newt-bashing begin!

      Bubba Ho-Tep

      The Cabin in the Woods

      Chronicle

      The Collector

      The Crazies

      The Descent

      Drag Me to Hell

      The Eclipse

      Frozen

High Tension (I didn't get to review that one...bummer)

      The Hills Have Eyes

      Hostel

      Joshua

      The Orphanage

      Paranormal Activity 2

      Paranormal Activity 3

      A Perfect Getaway

      Severance

Silly not to include Paranormal Activity, no? Beyond the Black Rainbow should be on the list. Splice. Pan's Labyrinth (in fact everything by del Toro inc Hellboy II), The Others... all better than Joshua for crissakes.

Lars Von Trier's "Antichrist" is the all-time most mess with your heed, scare you nutty movies of all time. It also happens to be a hugely controversial sado-psycho-sexual hot mess of a bombshell, and he has been accused of being guilty of an order of misogyny not normally seen. I mean this shit has been DENOUNCED! I for one do not think the movie is so, but rather that Von Trier is simply saying that if the whole Earth Mother thing is true, and women really are closer to the Earth, then what if the Earth is evil? What if it's not just us humans, but everything? Okay, some might see that as misogyny. Maybe it is. But Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsborough aren't idiots and I don't think they hate women either, and they gave some performances in this under-seen film that just go all out!! So whether you find Lars Von Trier films a thrill or an insult, you should check out "Antichrist" if you just want to be deeply frightened. And, uh, disturbed.

Yes, Pooped, I agree with you and TomC that Pan's Labyrinth should have been on there. It's one of my all-time faves; I slipped up. And you're right about Splice. It was awful. Fucking awful. http://www.straight.com/article-326764/vancouver/splice
