Angry lives up to its name on Wild Ox Shangri-La

      Wild Ox Shangri-La (Fum)

Calling your band Angry creates a lot of expectations. Either you’re being totally ironic and you’re going to strum like Cat Stevens and Cat Power on methadone, or you’re going to be straight-up, capital A angry. The Vancouver four-piece Angry chose the latter.

Angry is built out of now-defunct bands Jakartah and Last Plague. With Richard Fudalewski (guitars), Kyle Ledingham (drums), Raf Ceppetelli (bass), and Heath Fenton (vocals), the band’s freshman LP, Wild Ox Shangri-La, sounds like Botch mated with Fugazi. If either of these bands are in your collection, you will most likely get off on this record.

Sometimes the guitar riffs call on ’70s rock influences, but the lyrics (explicit, dudes) and scream-o–inspired shouts are strictly early 2000s–sounding rage.

Wild Ox Shangri-La is aggressive and pissed off, but it’s hard to tell why. Songs like “Umbrella Fight” and “The Finger” imply that Fenton might be totally off his meds—is he really beating people up when it rains?—or maybe just hilarious. Either way, his mental state (or comedy routine) plays second fiddle to Angry’s very apparent anger.

Heath is definitely off meds, there's no doubt about that.
