Strike action has forced the cancellation of at least three shows of Robert Lepage's much-anticipated The Far Side of the Moon at SFU Woodward's in the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts.

Yesterday SFU Woodward's announced the matinee performances of the show on November 3 and 4 would not go ahead. It attempted to present the 8 p.m. show tonight at the new time of 9:30 p.m., after picketers were scheduled to have left, but job action continued throughout the evening and organizers had to turn theatregoers away.

Pickets were at the Cordova Street Entrance and the Hastings Street Entrance.

Audience members were being offered either refunds or the opportunity to exchange tickets via the Cultch box office, boxoffice@thecultch.com or 604-251-1363.

The show, which is being presented in the Fei & Milton Wong Experimental Theatre, is scheduled to continue from November 6 to 10, with the legendary Lepage himself coming into town to take the role for the first time in years. Until now, Yves Jacques has performed the show at the venue.

CUPE has announced there will be a full withdrawal of services at all campuses on Wednesday (November 7), but no word as yet on how that might affect the show.

It is shameful that people interested in culture would oppose this job action. The arts have a long tradition of solidarity with workers.

But maybe not any longer, or at least not in Vancouver, where culture is but an accessory to be worn along with one's fluvog shoes and lemonlulu tights.

I hope CUPE wins its strike. The university, and the province, are also shameful in how they are treating their workers.
