As the U.S. media tallies the votes and projects the election results state by state, the lead has swung back and forth between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.

Around 7:30 p.m. on election night (November 6), CNN is alloting 158 electoral college votes to Republican presidential candidate Romney and 147 votes to Democratic incumbent Obama.

A candidate needs 270 votes to win the next four-year stint at the White House.

So far, CNN reports that Romney has taken 50 percent of the popular vote and Obama 48 percent.

Meanwhile, CNN hasn't declared a winner in the key battleground states of Ohio, Florida, and Virginia, where Romney and Obama are only a few percentage points apart.
