Surrey sex workers lose their drop-in centre

A group providing the only drop-in services for sex-trade workers in Surrey is looking for a new home.

Surrey Girlz, which was founded by former escort Amanda Bonella, ceased to operate from the space previously provided by the South Fraser Community Services Society as of March 31.

Annette Welsh, who heads an office ran by the society, told the Straight that space that used to house Surrey Girlz is up for renovation.

Bonella said she feels frustrated by the response she has gotten so far from non-profit groups she had approached.

“Can’t you just say [it’s for] women not sex workers [be]cause our board is religious?” Bonella recalled to the Straight one answer she received. “I guess sex workers are not religious.”

Bonella said that the owner of the Fireside Café on King George Highway has agreed to temporarily give them space but only for one night a week. “Nobody wants to have anything [to do] with us,” she said.
