      Douglas College closed All classes are cancelled today at the New Westminster campus of Douglas College after support workers who belong to the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union put up a picket line. More info is available here and here.

      BCIT walkout planned Members of the BCIT Faculty and Staff Association are going to take their first job action in their dispute by walking off the job from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., which will shut down classes.

      Transit fare hike TransLink will raise one-zone transit fares by 10 percent to $2.75 on January 1, 2013—the first increase since 2008—while two-zone fares will go from $3.75 to $4, and three-zone rides will increase from $5 to $5.50. Monthly FareCard passes will cost $10 to $19 more, depending on the number of zones they cover.

      RCMP officer identified Deputy RCMP Commissioner Craig Callens has issued a statement expressing condolences to the family of Const. Adrian Oliver, who was the Surrey Mountie killed yesterday morning in a traffic accident.

      Police complaints disclosed The Office of the B.C. Police Complaint Commissioner has released its annual report, which reveals that nearly half of the 1,122 files opened against municipal police involved Vancouver officers, and 23 of the 44 resulting in internal discipline also dealt with Vancouver police. One concerned an officer who accidentally discharged his firearm in the men's locker room.

      Obama will speak about Petraeus At 10:30 a.m., President Barack Obama will take questions from reporters about the resignation of CIA director David Petraeus, which came after he had an affair with his biographer.

      Monstrous baseball trade The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired pitchers Josh Johnson and Murk Buehrle, shortstop Jose Reyes, catcher John Buck, and utility player Emilio Bonifacio in return for shortstop Yunel Escobar (who put a homophobic message under his eyes late in the year), pitcher Henderson Alvarez, catcher Jeff Mathis, and prospects Adeiny Hechavarria, Jake Marisnick, Anthony Desclafani, and Justin Nicolino and $4 million.
