      Fans of Studio Ghibli will want to head to Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour Street) from December 14 to January 3, when the theatre is set to cohost a major retrospective of the Japanese animated studio’s work. Castles in the Sky: The Masters of Studio Ghibli will feature 12 films by Studio Ghibli, which was founded in in Tokyo in 1985 by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, Toshio Suzuki, and Yasuyoshi Tokuma. All films at Vancity Theatre will be shown on 35mm print and in English.

      The retrospective will open with Miyazaki’s 1988 film, My Neighbor Totoro, on December 14 at 6:30 p.m. The beloved family movie, featuring the vocal talents of Dakota and Elle Fanning, tells the story of two sisters who discover a family of Totoros living in their backyard. On December 15, Studio Ghibli’s first film, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, will be shown at 3 p.m., and Academy Award-winning Spirited Away will be screened at 5:20 p.m.

      Other films rarely seen in North American theatres included in the retrospective include 2008’s Ponyo, which features voiceover by Cate Blanchett, Liam Neeson, and Matt Damon; 1992’s Porco Rosso; 1995’s Whisper of the Heart; 1994’s Pom Poko; 2002’s The Cat Returns, which features Anne Hathaway and Tim Curry; and 1996’s Castle in the Sky, which includes the voices of Anna Paquin and James Van Der Beek.

      Popular movies, 1997’s fantasy flick Princess Mononoke, which stars Billy Crudup, Billy Bob Thornton, Minnie Driver, Claire Danes, and Gillian Anderson; and 2004’s Howl’s Moving Castle, which features Christian Bale, Lauren Bacall, Blythe Danner, Emily Mortimer, and Jean Simmons, round out the retrospective.

      The films are rated G or PG and open to all ages with the exception of Princess Mononoke, which is rated 14A. Tickets are $7 to $9 and can be purchased online or at the Vancity box office.
