DJ Revise, Silence Fiction (Independent)

A mashed-up mix to please the fiercest weed fiends, DJ Revise's latest unauthorized compilation establishes him as one of Vancouver's brightest new selectors. A Prince George native, Revise has been spinning around town for the past two years and currently resides at Artificial Intelligence, a fortnightly Saturday event at the Arts Club on Granville Island.

Silence Fiction (available at Bassix and Boomtown Records) distills the last 10 years of midtempo electronic music, with nary a track passing by without a rub from Revise's sure hands. Take, for example, the second track, which finds the spinner laying Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sounds of Silence" over a dusty breakbeat, giving the folk-pop classic a kick in the ass.

Elsewhere, Revise rolls out Aphex Twin's classic "Alberto Balsalm", a squelchy number comprised of factory-floor sounds and celestial synth riffs. Hip-hop heads get their fix here, too, as cats like the Roots, Gang Starr, and Jurassic 5 lend their trademark cheeba mysticism to the proceedings. But for all the quality names on hand, the mix's strengths are due to its creator's deft sense of juxtaposition, as when he couples Radiohead's "I Might Be Wrong" and Boards of Canada's "Telephasic Workshop". More than just an astute curator, Revise is an artist in his own right.
