Eugene Ripper

Folk impresario Eugene Ripper has never been one to wait around for things to happen. The proactive musician's Fast Folk Underground has brought together cool musicians under its banner for years in Vancouver, Toronto, and Halifax, while Ripper's own muse had led him to release a steady stream of records drawing on rockabilly, punk, and pop. His latest, The Ballad of Black , finds the singer waxing nostalgic one moment ("Lines") and ripping it up the next ("Hangman"). The new tunes get a workout this Saturday (June 5) at the Media Club, when Ripper plays an FFU show that includes power-pop draw Pepper Sands, Bontempi (featuring former members of Halifax band Plumtree), and the velvet-voiced Heather Griffin.
