Foreshadowings of Fringe

Perennial favourites like Scotland's Jem Rolls, England's Screwed and Clued, and Australia's Jonno Katz will again appear at this year's 22nd annual Vancouver Fringe Festival (September 7 to 17 at venues centred on and around Granville Island). The announcements of the main-stage performer lineup were made at the organization's first Fringe Reveal at the Yale on February 20. New to the 2006 event will be two acts from Capetown, Anton Smuts's Stealing Venus and Kirchmann Productions' Train Your Man, as well as one from Moscow, Inferno Productions' Hand of the Unseen. Among other guests will be Calgary's Monster Theatre and the Bay Area's Randy Rutherford, both repeat visitors. The dozens of local contributors include the Saucy Fops, Theatre Tart, Terri-Lyn Storey, and Daniel Packard. And one show-Lissa Layng's A Woman of Independent Means-became such a word-of-mouth hit last year that it's back for a remount for those who missed it the first time around. Unlike its counterparts on the Canadian Fringe circuit, which hold lottery competitions, Vancouver's fest chooses its acts on a first-come, first-serve basis. It has yet to reveal the so-called Bring Your Own Venue satellite productions and Kids Fringe players; those deadlines aren't till mid-May.
