Get Wasted Again

Music Waste is a go again this year. The underground-music festival will be taking place May 19 to 22 and, according to the official Web site (www.musicwaste.ca/), is still seeking performers, talent, volunteers, venues, and sponsors. Advance planning might not be the festival's strong suit, but a seat-of-the-pants feel seems to suit an event that started in earnest back in 1994 as a sort of salon des refusés for acts rejected by Music West. Music Waste has continued in an irregular fashion since then. Last year's edition took place May 20 to 23 at venues such as the Cobalt, the Marine Club, the Piccadilly Pub, the Purple Onion, Pub 340, and the Railway Club. Performers included S.T.R.E.E.T.S., Black Rice, the Doers, Josh Martinez, Kids These Days, Brundlefly, Bella, Elizabeth, Mr. Plow, the Winks, Threat From Outer Space, Panurge, Vancougar, and the tastefully named Cunt. As for Music Waste's more mainstream predecessor, this year's edition of New Music West is scheduled for September 7 to 11, and applications are being accepted until June 17. Organizers have yet to release any details about either the festival or the conference, but this is NMW's 15th year, so we can probably expect a special event or two reflecting that.
