Tsunami Benefits Continue To Surface

Avril Lavigne, Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk, Raine Maida, Delerium, and the Barenaked Ladies, who are among the superstar acts performing a big-ticket tsunami-relief concert at GM Place next Saturday (January 29), aren't the only artists working for the cause. A number of local promoters and performers are pitching in as well. On January 8 and 9, a lineup of 48 bands--including the Real Mackenzies, Big John Bates, Jazzberry Ram, Crystal Pistol, Rio Bent, the Flairs, Damn the Diva, Jeremy Fisher, and Bakelite--played the Buffalo Club and raised $8,000 for the Canadian Red Cross and World Vision. On Saturday (January 22), the same venue will host another benefit for the Red Cross, this one featuring Cherrybomb, Superbeing, Todd Kerns, Dan Swiminer, MLE, and Aaron Ritchie. Tickets for that one are $10 at the door. And on January 29, while the big names are taking the stage at GM Place, a number of homegrown artists will be paying tribute to some of their favourite '80s sounds when Jukebox Heroes takes over the Media Club. Stabilo, Windows '78, Kooper Kain, SK Robot, Robert Wilson, Paul Myers, Clive, Ryan Hauschild, Don Alder, Andy Collins, Philippe, Mani Khaira, Benjamin Keith, Holiday, Hot Tub Boys, and Lumpy will perform songs by the likes of Depeche Mode, the Cure, New Order, and Duran Duran. The show starts at 8 p.m., cover charge is $10, and proceeds will be split between the Red Cross Tsunami Fund and the Unicef Children's Fund.
