Artists have the opportunity to apply for free studio space in a heritage building on Vancouver’s West Side as part of a residency program organized by the park board.

A call for applications was issued this week for individual artists or artist groups interested in working out of the West Point Grey Community Centre complex. Two temporary studio spaces totalling more than 800 square feet are being offered on the third floor of the Aberthau Mansion, located on West 2nd Avenue near Jericho Beach.

Under the program, the successful applicants will have use of the space at no charge in exchange for offering arts programming to the community. The initiative is related to the park board’s field house studio residency program, which launched last October and involves similar arrangements for the use of facilities in nine city parks.

The call for applications reads: “This call is open to artists, artist collectives and arts organizations working in the artistic disciplines of environmental and performing arts; composers, musicians, choreographers, dancers, theatre artists, environmental art, celebration arts, film/video, and social intervention arts-making practices etc.”

The deadline for applications for the studio space at West Point Grey Community Centre is March 27. The park board is providing the studio residency spaces until January 2015.

Right, and all the while Artist space in the Heritage building at 7th and Scotia is for a pub, brewery and general office uses. Only a tiny fraction of the original building and far less than the minimum required is actually arts space in the building on 7th Avenue...
