Vancouver cultural groups and artists have received $3.52 million in provincial funds as part of the latest round of approved B.C. Arts Council grants.

The B.C. government announced on March 18 the release of $8.36 million in funding for galleries, arts councils, performing-arts groups, and other recipients across the province.

Those funds come from the $16.8 million provided to the B.C. Arts Council, a provincial government agency, for the 2012-2013 fiscal year.

For Vancouver recipients, the largest single amounts are $643,000 in operating assistance to the Vancouver Art Gallery and $265,000 for the ArtStarts in Schools grant program.

Other major amounts include $185,000 for the Museum of Vancouver, $90,000 for the Vancouver International Children’s Festival, and $82,000 for the Vancouver International Film Festival.

So where did the other $8.44 million go?

The 2013-14 budget for BC is $44 billion. The amounts actually allocated for arts in Vancouver (is this the city specifically, or all the Lower Mainland?) is somewhere in the range of .01%. That, frankly, is grotesque.

The Vancouver Moving Theatre, which produces the Downtown Eastside Festival and many other worthy projects, should have received a generous grant. Shame on the Liberals for not providing.

This story is little more than a PSA for the Liberal government. Where is the context? How does this relate to the budget cuts in past budgets? How does this compare to the arts granting budgets in other provinces? This story is really lacking in substance and depth and makes little attempt to tackle the issues related to this announcement. Where is the critical thinking and the research?

I appreciate that you have a lot of questions, but this was just a quick news brief, not a commentary or analysis piece.
