Plays rarely get as close to the headlines of today as God and the Indian, running at the Firehall Arts Centre until April 20. As the story of a Cree woman who confronts a priest she believes abused her when she was at a residential school, it speaks to all the questions of guilt and justice being raised by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission revelations of abuse that was buried for decades. The show has an astounding pedigree, too, with a script by leading Native playwright Drew Hayden Taylor, and stars powerhouse First Nations actor Tantoo Cardinal as the wronged panhandler, and Michael Kopsa as the priest she one day recognizes from her traumatic past.
