To celebrate International Women’s Day, the Firehall Arts Centre is presenting Toronto artist Heather Hermant’s interdisciplinary ribcage: this wide passage, the true story of the first Jewish woman to land in Canada.

Esther Brandeau arrived in Canada in 1738 dressed as a Christian male labourer. Calling herself Jacques La Fargue, she was outed on both counts and punished by authorities.

The urbanink production, from Tuesday (March 3) to March 8, includes haunting video installations and live music by Jaron Freeman-Fox to reveal this little-known chapter of Canadian history.
