Fringe Fest 2013: The Johnny Tomorrow Chronicles prove a space oddity

    1 of 1 2 of 1

The facts flow fast and furious from actor-writer Michael John Unger’s mouth as he plays Johnny Tomorrow. For Johnny, space is both a passion and an escape, and Unger makes a picture-perfect space hero: tall and handsome in a shiny silver space suit and obviously passionate about the solar system. Star Wars and Star Trek get name-checked, of course, as Johnny recounts how his obsession with space evolved. Despite the melding of fact and fiction, and the childlike wonder that space exploration triggers in many people (see the joy that Cmdr. Chris Hadfield spread throughout the world last year as he communicated and recorded music in space), Johnny Tomorrow feels somewhat academic. That suspicion is justified when Unger reveals that Johnny isn’t his only alter ego: he also works at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, where apparently one can go use the telescope by donation on Friday and Saturday nights.

      At the Carousel Theatre on September 10 (6 p.m.), 11 (8 p.m.), 13 (7 p.m.), 14 (3 p.m.), 15 (6:15 p.m.).
