Vancouver set to allocate cultural grants to 188 arts groups
Vancouver city council will vote this week on $7.7 million in cultural grants to 188 local arts organizations.
In a report going before the city’s standing committee on city finance and services on Wednesday (April 15), staff are recommending $400,000 in project grants, $457,000 in annual grants, and $6.85 million in operating grants.
Some of the largest operating grants include $2.18 million to the Vancouver Art Gallery, $519,400 to the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, $758,000 to the Museum of Vancouver, and $400,000 to the Vancouver Maritime Museum.
Other major amounts include $100,000 to Ballet B.C., $160,000 to the Arts Club, $85,000 to the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society, $75,000 to the Firehall Theatre Society, $80,000 to the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival Society, $96,000 to Science World, $115,000 to the Vancouver East Cultural Centre, $80,000 to the Vancouver Folk Music Festival Society, and $126,500 to the Vancouver International Children’s Festival Society.
A total of 32 annual grants are being recommended for groups including the Association of Book Publishers of B.C., Blackbird Theatre, City Opera Vancouver, the Community Arts Council of Vancouver, and the Vancouver International Dance Festival Society.
Council will also vote on project grants to more than 70 organizations, including the Capture Photography Festival Society, the Bill Reid Foundation, Caravan World Rhythms Society, the Granville Island Cultural Society, and the Vancouver Asian Film Festival Society.
The city received grant requests from 204 groups, and a total of $9 million in funding was requested. Sixteen project requests were not recommended for funding.
A new, $50,000 cultural grants program aimed at supporting emerging artists is expected to launch in the fall.
