Standup comedian and actor Rick Ducommun, who appeared in movies like The Burbs and Groundhog Day, died at the age of 62 in Vancouver on June 12.

He died from complications from diabetes.

The Saskatchewan-born actor is survived by wife Leslie and kids Hudson, Cord, Austin, and Nash.

There will be a private celebration of life at Lafflines on Saturday (June 20).

Ducommun got his start in standup here in Vancouver before moving on to comedic roles. He also was on the kids show filmed here called Zig Zag, with Bill Reiter and Terry David Mulligan. Along with hits like The Burbs, Die Hard, and Groundhog Day, more recently, he played the father in “Scary Movie.”

Hollywood has been responding, with articles in mags like Variety and Hollywood Reporter, and tweets, including a series on twitter from 'Burbs director Joe Dante, who revealed that Ducommun, a relative unknown at the time, beat out SCTV's Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis to take the role as Tom Hanks' annoying neighbour. Dante also directed Ducommun in Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

Here is another Tweet from the director.

And for old time's sake, here's a clip from back in Ducommun's old comedy days.
