Symphony in the Park at Deer Lake Park

If your summer-vacation budget doesn’t extend to a fire-viewing expedition up Sechelt Inlet or a tour of dry salmon streams on Vancouver Island, consider the leafy oasis that is Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park. Swimming isn’t recommended but the rental canoes are, with the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and the Burnaby Art Gallery handy for when you want to get out of the sun.

The big attraction this Sunday (July 12) at 7 p.m., though, is Symphony in the Park, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s free annual venture into plein air playing.

Gordon Gerrard conducts; Melody Ye Yuan will be featured in “Summer”, from Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons; and the rest of the program spans everything from Star Wars themes to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture—for which we’re assured the cannons will be firing blanks.
