It’s not often you get to see a new summer festival launched here, but that’s exactly what will be happening this Thursday to Saturday (July 23 to 25) in Kwikwetlem—otherwise known as Coquitlam.

The new All Nations Festival celebrates Coast Salish peoples and brings them together with settler cultures through panel discussions, an art exhibition, traditional foods, performances, and much more.

Author, teacher, and poet Lee Maracle (shown here)—a Coast Salish grandmother with a deep connection to the land and her culture, who has written books such as Ravensong and Bent Box—will deliver the keynote address at a colloquium at the Evergreen Cultural Centre on Friday (July 24).

Look for free outdoor music stages at Town Centre Park on Friday and Saturday, featuring everyone from Doug & the Slugs to Keliya, the Funk Hunters, and Ostwelve. There will also be a Green Fair & Artisan Market, two days of food trucks, and even Coast Salish lacrosse matches.

I would happily see more of this kind of festival. I was sad that I was not well enough to participate this year, but will be looking forward to next years events.
