Mention Elvira to some people and they’ll start singing, “Giddy up, oom poppa oom poppa mow mow.” But adjust the pronunciation from a long “i” to a short one, and you can only mean Elvira Kurt.

The Canadian comic is a national treasure. Radio listeners know her as the curator of the Cultural Hall of Shame on CBC’s q. If you only know her from the godawful and mercifully short-lived TV show PopCultured, do yourself a favour and go see her perform standup, something she’s really good at.

Kurt will be headlining Laugh Out! at the Vogue Theatre on Saturday (August 1), presented by the Vancouver Pride Society and TD Bank Group. Joining her will be Darcy Michael, Symone Says, Queer Prov, and CKNW’s Drex.
