Now & Then: Vancouver Lowbrow Trailblazers at Hot Art Wet City

Back in the day (well, the late 1990s and very early 2000s), Gastown’s Moon Base Gallery used to rock a lot of the city’s raging wave of “low-brow” and tiki art.

This weekend, Hot Art Wet City brings a blast from the past, with a show that features a lot of the artists who used to exhibit there, including familiar names like Jim Cummins (aka I Braineater), Nicole Steen, Vicki M, Ken Gerberick, and Mark Atomos Pilon (the Georgia Straight illustrator whose acrylic-on-board When It rains, It pours is shown here).

The show, enticingly titled Now & Then: Vancouver Lowbrow Trailblazers, runs Thursday (August 6) to August 29, with an opening reception on Friday night (August 7), where you can no doubt party like it’s 1999.
