Fringe Fest 2015: Porn & Pinochet underplays its politics

    1 of 1 2 of 1

      I kept checking my watch.

Andy Canete’s solo show is a cross between stand-up comedy and storytelling. Shortly after Canete was born in Chile, his family moved to Canada, fleeing dictator Augusto Pinochet. Then Dad moved them back for 10 years, starting when Canete was 13.

The politics are underplayed, though, and Canete’s personal story is all over the place. In an extended section of supposed comedy, he describes the various ways that his parents hit him and his siblings. Begging us to laugh, he insists, “I was not a battered child. I walked away every time. And, like I say, I deserved most of it.”

Sometimes he’s charming and occasionally he’s funny, but that’s not enough.

      At Studio 16 on September 11 (8:35 p.m.), 12 (9:30 p.m.), 13 (2:45 p.m.), 16 (9:30 p.m.), 18 (5 p.m.), and 19 (4:10 p.m.)

Fail review numb nuts. What show were you at?

Must have been awesome experiencing this show from the half dead crowd in Victoria when you viewed this.

In many ways, Andres took us to the depth of family intrigue that most people don't want to venture. And he did it all with a microphone within the fourth wall. If you are looking for characters and costumes the arts club is around the corner. If you want to feel uncomfortable with high stakes asking yourself the same questions told first hand this guy is the real deal. Terrible two sentence journalism if you wanted to even call it that. Straight Fail.
